Psychological Assessments

Psychological assessments aim to measure aspects of a client’s cognitive abilities, behavioral patterns, and emotional functioning. Testing helps to target any potential needs for therapy or school/work accommodations by establishing an appropriate psychological diagnosis; it also helps to coordinate care with your doctors or any other agency that may require your most up to date psychological information. A comprehensive evaluation can take anywhere between several hours to multiple days, depending upon the type of testing needed. Typically, a one-hour initial diagnostic interview is followed by a customized psychological evaluation on a separate day. After the evaluation has been completed, patients will be invited to participate in a feedback session along with their therapist in order to review the final results of their testing. At this time, the therapist and patient will discuss the therapist’s follow-up treatment plans or clinical recommendations along with the patient’s impressions of the test results. Testing services can help to facilitate a better sense of understanding between a client and his/her environment by revealing the client’s individual strengths and challenges more clearly. Additionally, psychological testing can create opportunities for a more streamlined approach to follow up services.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a research-based treatment method that allows individuals to learn how to self-regulate emotional and physiological markers, which are associated with stress, frustration, anxiety, and other forms of emotional distress. While there are many ways to monitor these physiological markers, such as skin temperature or muscle tension, Illinois Behavioral Health Group specifically utilizes a biofeedback technique that focuses on Heart Rate Variability (HRV training). Biofeedback can help you focus on bringing awareness and control to your body in new and exciting ways. It aims to shift emotions, as opposed to focusing on thoughts, making it an excellent supplement for talk therapy.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a specific form of biofeedback in which individuals develop increased awareness of and the ability to alter their brain’s electrical activity. Over time, the brain’s baseline changes, naturally creating the desirable brain activity.

Sessions typically last 30-60 minutes and are conducted in conjunction with Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback treatment. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, passive treatment and creates change via the brain’s natural learning ability. Individuals have several electrodes placed on key-identified areas on their head during training sessions, which serve as a real-time measurement of brain activity. Feedback is then provided via audio or video.
